Dodd Oil Building Restoration 161 Meadow Street, Winsted, Connecticut
In 2025, the historic Dodd Oil Building at 161 Meadow Street underwent an extensive restoration and renovation, returning the long-underutilized structure to active commercial use while preserving its industrial character.
The project transformed the building into a fully modernized facility for Mad River Detailing, an automotive detailing business designed to operate at a high professional standard within a historic envelope.
The restoration was completed for the new owners, Rick Welch and his son Kyle Welch, with a focus on durability, functionality, and long-term adaptability.
Scope of work included structural repairs, building envelope improvements, comprehensive interior renovation tailored to automotive use, modern mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, and code-compliant upgrades meeting current safety and operational standards. Where possible, original
industrial elements were preserved to maintain the building’s historic character.
The completed project demonstrates how thoughtful restoration and adaptive reuse can give historic commercial buildings renewed purpose—supporting local business while respecting the working history of Winsted.
